SILV02 – Introduction to silversmithing.  Make a substantial sterling silver ring from sheet material

This is a 3 hour course which is ideal to introduce you to silversmithing techniques.

Participants will be provided with up to 16grams of sterling silver in a 15.5 mm x 1mm thick sheet. The band can be finished by either polishing to a smooth shine or textured by planishing

Participants will be provided with all the materials necessary to finish the substantial silver ring band.

Skills covered

• The silver strip will be cut and prepared to the desired width
• Participants will be shown the technique of sizing the metal to a particular ring size. The silver will be cut to size and prepared for silver soldering
• After an introduction to the Smith Mini Oxy/acetylene touch participants will silver solder the ring
• The ring band will be cleaned up ready for either final polishing or texturing with the planishing hammer
• The purity of the silver will be marked by stamping with the standard sterling .925 silver punch
• Finally the final high finish will be applied
