Flush Setting, 3 hour course

It is a practical 3 hour course where participants will be introduced to setting a 3mm brilliant cut stone. With a little practice, this essential technique allows very quick, perfect stone setting for your jewellery designs.

Participants will be issued with 4 brilliant cut 3mm diameter CZ stones and an annealed copper strip. The principles of flush setting using a burnisher  can be practiced until the process becomes second nature.

A binocular microscope will  used to see how the counter intuitive process works.

All tools, qualified tuition and consumables are provided in a fully equipped air conditioned workshop.

The course is conducted in an unhurried supportive happy and friendly environment.

The Process

The process involves a small ridge being produced within the seating of the stone. This is done by using a fine steel burnisher. The effect of this ridge is to secure the stone in place. The burnishing process is counter intuitive but once the process is explored with the aid of a binocular microscope, the principle can be quickly learned.

Each participant will set 4 x 3mm CZ stones in a copper strip in this 3 hour session, using a 1mm drill bit a bud bur, and 2 cone burs. These are supplied to each attendee to use during the course. The participant will also be given a comprehensive e booklet covering all aspects of the flush setting session

• The objective in flush setting will be discussed

• How to mark the start of the seating for successful drilling
• The use of a setting gauge to assess the depth of the setting
• Using a binocular microscope to observe the depth of the setting and the effect of using a burnisher on the metal
• Techniques to accurately open up the seating to the correct size
• Burnishing and finishing the setting
• Repairing a larger than ideal seating
• Making or tuning a burnisher

All materials including the copper blank and 4 x 3mm brilliant cut CZ are supplied.

 

Availability: This class runs multiple times per week on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays between 8am & 3:30pm.  We offer a wide variety of course options so booking is essential.
