SILV01 – Introduction to Silversmithing.  Make a substantial sterling silver ring from sheet material

This is up to a 4 hour course which is ideal to introduce you to silversmithing techniques.

The class involves an introduction to basic tools used in silversmithing,  silver soldering, filling, sawing, annealing to make the silver workable, bending the silver into a ring shape, applying a plannished texture to the silver (optional) or a highly polished surface.

Participants will require approximately 16grams of sterling silver in a 15.5 mm x 1mm thick sheet.

The band can be finished by either polishing to a smooth shine or textured by planishing.

All tools, qualified tuition and consumables are provided in a fully equipped air conditioned workshop.

The course is conducted in an un hurried supportive happy and friendly environment.

It is open for a one to one class or self organized groups at discounted participant prices.

 

Skills covered

• The silver strip will be cut and prepared to the desired width.
• Participants will be shown the technique of sizing the metal to a particular ring size. The silver will be cut to size and prepared for silver soldering
• After an introduction to the Smith Mini Oxy/acetylene touch participants will silver solder the ring
• The ring band will be cleaned up ready for either final polishing or texturing with the planishing hammer
• The purity of the silver will be marked by stamping with the standard sterling .925 silver punch
• Finally the final high finish will be applied

The cost of the silver is in addition to the session.

Approx. 16grams of silver will be needed for a larger size ring. We can supply this at the current price of silver. Please contact us for the current price.

 

Availability: On selected days to be arranged on booking Week days for 1 to 2 participants and Weekends for 3 to 4 participants. Please contact to arrange a suitable time.

Class sessions must be booked in advance. Sorry there are no refunds but the class can be deferred to an alternative mutually agreed time provided we have at least 12 hours notice.
